Seminar Report,
Introduction,
As a employee and member of this great organization “ULCS-Utility Line Construction Services” I want to express my appreciation and my gratitude as I felt honored for being chosen by the Management Group, Training Department and “Immediate Supervisor” with the support of the U.W.U.A. Local 223, AFL-CIO “Power for America Training Trust” to Participate on the Doble Seminar title “Life of a Transformer 2011” hosted by Doble Engineering Company in Orlando, Florida.
Context and Development
On Monday, February 7, 2011, The Welcome introduction and Opening remarks was presented by Richard K. Ladroga, P.E., Vice President, Global Strategic Development for Doble Engineering Company. He opened the seminar by pointing out the motivation for which the seminar was created. Aware of the absence of manufacturers of high power transformer in this country were diminished as well the knowledge of the trade. In 2003, they adventure to create this seminar to assist the new generation that have been incorporating to industry in the past decade, giving the opportunity to gain a great deal of valuable knowledge from “The Best of the Best” in the industry. This seminar is a tool to educate, inspire and set a new role to understand the life and maintenance of a transformer exchanging experiences, ideas and new innovation in the world of transformers,
Experience and Comments
The seminar was structure in two sections, A Core Training and Advance Training as the seminar was started the first morning both group were kept together then separated after the first session. Most of my attention was given to the Core Training, where some of the speaker came down to basics of the transformer design scaling real fast to the complexity of designing and manufacturing transformer. It was very impressive to be exposed to that level of knowledge on the design and manufacturing of transformers.
One of the speakers that impressed me the most was Mr. H. Jin Sim, P.E. VP & Chief Technology Officer, Waukesha Electric System. He was talking about Transformer Design & Manufacturing. He mentioned about the use of PRD “Pressure Relief Device” These devices are design to relief pressure in the event of a short or a fault, preserving the integrity of the tank. From technical manufacturers manuals, one (1) PRD for every Ten Thousand (10.000) Gallons of Oil are usually used. He continue by saying that 1940’s General Electric performed some experiments with transformer exposed to internal faults where PRD where used, 1 PRD per 10.000 Gallons of Oil, 2 PRD per 10.000 Gallons, the results were that the tanks would collapse in the presence of that great of internal forces under a fault. They even try a transformer without a cover still ruptured as the blast of the oil (being a not compressible liquid) would destroy their joint and welds.
Other Topics
Insulation Material
By Michael Franchek, Weidmann Electric Technology
Manufacturing and Process and how it is use in the manufacturing of transformers.
Transformer Oil
By Jimmy Rasco, Ergon
He explained the process of refining petroleum to produce transformer oil from raw petroleum to final product. Types of transformer Oil, additives, corrosive consequence in the use of oils with content acids (sulfur) in their chemical composition and degasification and testing before the oil is shipped and received.
Transformer Bushing Field Issues and Replacement Consideration
By Randy Williams, ABB
He explained that General Electric played an important role in the manufacture of apparatus bushing in the early 1920’s and the how “type U” bushings are becoming a problem for the electric industry around the world because the failure of its condenser rapid increasing the power factor in transformers. File attach to this report explain more in detail the type u issue.
Transformers Maintenances
By Rick Youngblood, Doble Engineering.
This speaker is a great individual. He knows the reality of the work of maintenance; he said that he had good and bad experience as he emerges from the field, making him a good realistic speaker bringing his exciting experiences to the table as a tool to teach us and avoid situation that can cost time and money by working safe while taking care of power equipment.
There were other important topics were exposed and discuss as well very important session of “Question and Answers” to the panel of speakers, good information and ideas. New products and technologies were advertised and shown. Interaction with their sales persons and their comments, benefiting me and enriching my knowledge as I continue to learn this world of electricity.
Conclusion
Overall, it was a great experience. For me being able to be there to listen and learn from the Best is a “privilege”. Thanks you for the “Trust and Support” set upon me, by helping me to become a better technician, qualified to serve you for the future to come.
